The Ups and Downs of Penpalsmanship

Excerpts from  Dear Stephanie, Dear Paul:

Your letters certainly are good for me, because some weeks ago I was always the last one up, but now I am provided with an incentive I am up with the lark at 7:30 sharp!
                                                                                                             ...Stephanie

No amount of words could do justice to the feeling of joy I had today when I came home from work and found two letters from you. You really do write wonderful letters.
                                                                                                                   ...Paul

When I went down to breakfast this morning I thought to myself if I don’t hear from Paul today, it’s very doubtful whether I shall hear from him again...I wondered if you had grown weary of writing so many letters to me and you felt you couldn’t write any more...
                                                                                                               ...Stephanie

Dear, dear, dear, dear Stephanie!  I have received your letter in which you suggest that maybe I am tired of writing to you.  I hope that day never comes!  Really and truly, don’t ever let your mind entertain such thoughts again.
                                                                                                               …Paul

I’m so glad this letter is going today.  If my surmises are correct, you will receive it on Monday next.  Now if I had sent it yesterday, the receiving date would have been Saturday and you would have answered with your Sunday letter.  But if you get this on Monday, you will probably write me again on that day!  Don’t you think I’m rather crafty?
                                                                                                            ...Stephanie

I agree that our letters have not been very exciting lately, but then, that’s the way it goes.  When you don’t have a muse, letters are a chore and a duty, but at other times writing is sheer delight.  When you think about it though, we both have a right to get discouraged now and then -- after all, we’ve been writing to each other now for a year and a half!
What can I say for a final paragraph?  Well, I love you -- that’s all!  Will the day ever come when there will be no more final paragraphs -- no more goodbyes?
                                                                                                              …Paul
